Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has announced a new type of visa, the “creative visa,” which aims to support individuals who contribute to the development of Abu Dhabi’s cultural and creative industries and encourage the arrival of talented individuals from around the world. The visa is for individuals who work in the creative sector, including but not limited to cultural heritage, performing arts, visual arts, crafts, gaming and e-sports, media and publishing. It can be obtained for up to 10 years.
The initiative aims to enable residency and employment in Abu Dhabi, while at the same time influencing the development of the creative sector in the UAE.
“This mutually beneficial scheme will attract innovative ideas and creativity to Abu Dhabi, and the ‘creative visa’ will give those using it access to world-class facilities and infrastructure, as well as an attractive, safe and inspiring living and working environment.” – Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, said.
Abu Dhabi’s creative sector is growing rapidly, and those who take advantage of the “creative visa” will find themselves in a place with a large art community, as well as many well-known museums and art galleries, such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat and Warehouse241. In addition, the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi are also currently under construction in Abu Dhabi.
“The Creative Visa” is part of the five-year strategy announced in November 2019 by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, which includes five strategic goals focused on the development of culture and creativity. These goals are: protecting and supporting cultural heritage, increasing awareness of and engagement with cultural heritage and the arts, stimulating creativity as a driver for education and social change, increasing the capacity of the cultural industry, and contributing to the growth and diversification of the economy.
It is worth mentioning that for some expats, obtaining a visa can lead to UAE citizenship. Over the past few weeks, there has been a legal change to allow expats to obtain UAE citizenship, something that was previously impossible. This provision applies to the most distinguished and talented individuals, such as doctors, scientists, and those in the creative sector, among others.
