Saudi Arabia: Economic revolution and new opportunities for Polish business

Saudi Arabia is the largest economy in the Arab world and one of the most important geopolitical players in the Middle East. The kingdom is dynamically undergoing a transformation on an unprecedented scale. Saudi Arabia is dynamically transforming its image – from a conservative, closed country to one of the world’s most open and ambitious investment centers. Today, we can clearly see how the kingdom is becoming a global center of gravity, attracting capital, media attention and the biggest names in global business. Even companies from the United States are increasingly choosing Riyadh over Silicon Valley, looking for investment opportunities in the high-tech, green energy or infrastructure sectors.

What Dubai has been building for decades, Saudi Arabia is accomplishing at an express pace – the country today resembles one big construction site, with dozens of megaprojects being built in parallel: from futuristic cities to high-tech industrial zones. This scale and pace are unprecedented – evidence of a historic transformation aimed at opening up to the world, building strong international relations and diversifying the economy. This makes Saudi Arabia one of the most attractive destinations for European – including Polish – entrepreneurs.

Economic Growth, Stability and Demographic Transformation

Saudi Arabia currently has a population of about 34 million, and by 2050 that number will grow to more than 45 million, translating into a significant increase in consumption and investment potential.

The median age is 30.3 years which indicates a young, active population. Urbanization also plays a key role: more than 84% of the population lives in cities, which generates a huge demand for infrastructure, housing and public transportation. By comparison, the level of urbanization in Poland is 59.6%.

Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s 20 largest economies. After years of oil dependence, the economy is showing a strong diversification trend, attracting investment in new economy sectors.

Inflation remains relatively low, and fiscal and monetary policies promote stability. The ryad effectively controls the exchange rate of the Saudi riyal, which remains pegged to the U.S. dollar, further increasing predictability for investors.

Saudi Arabia’s Economic Transformation: Vision 2030 in Practice

Vision 2030 envisions a fundamental transformation – by the end of the decade, Saudi Arabia wants to base its growth on innovative and diversified sources of revenue. Among other things, it plans to increase the private sector’s share of GDP from 40% to 65%, develop the SME sector and significantly increase female employment.

Saudi Arabia is also betting on developing local production and increasing exports in non-commodity sectors, which means the need for modern technology, specialized services and international cooperation. This is an open door for Polish entrepreneurs looking to enter into strategic alliances in the Middle East.

The Gulf region – including Saudi Arabia – is still a very traditional, relational business environment. You can’t do effective business there from a distance – you have to be physically present, talking, building trust and personal relationships.
